Summer is quickly approaching and Access America Prep is still accepting applications for its Summer Immersion College Prep Program. The applicant pool for colleges and universities all over the US has become increasingly competitive each year. Today, the most highly selective colleges in the country accept less than 30% of all applicants. AAP’s Summer Immersion Program is an excellent opportunity for students to get the edge on the college application process. The comprehensive program covers every aspect of the college application process including preparation for the SAT, TOEFL iBT, essay writing, interview coaching and college admissions seminars. The 4 week program takes place on the campus of Wesleyan University, giving students a closer look into life at one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in America. Need a summer job?

If you’re on the hunt for summer internships it will definitely help to think outside of the box. The number of summer jobs available at large and well-known companies has decreased in the last year but opportunities are definitely out there. If you enjoy traveling you might consider gaining work experience abroad. There are a number of online resources that can help you find overseas programs that suit your interests, such as internabroad.com, studyabroad.com and http://www.crossculturalsolutions.org/programs/teen-volunteer-abroad.aspx.

If you want to stay closer to home you might consider looking for job opportunities at startup companies. Internmatch.com connects students with internships at start-up companies and is a good tool for finding summer jobs. At a new company you’re less likely to be an office gopher, which is often the case at well-established companies, and more likely to get real experience and insight into different aspects of a particular business.

Tools for students in the digital age

The digital age has influenced the way in which students approach their studies. Laptops have made their way into classrooms, replacing pens and notebooks for some students; bibliographies are now sprinkled with citations from online resources and databases. Now there are even web apps to help the tech savvy student stay organized. If you fall into that category, check out notely.net.

James Franco to teach students about James Franco

James Franco as proven himself to be quite the multitasker in the past year. Most recently, the famous actor/director/teacher/PhD candidate with an MFA from Columbia University, announced that he would be teaming up with Tyler Danna to teach a course at Columbia College Hollywood called Master Class: Editing James Franco…with James Franco. Maybe this wildly narcissistic move is his reaction to Yale’s veto of his proposal to teach a “very special class” this winter, or maybe he just thought it would be funny to teach a course about himself. Either way, he seems to be putting his degrees to use!

Remember the media frenzy Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen caused when they announced that they were attending NYU in 2004? I’m not just talking about the tabloids… even the New York Times considered the Olsen twins’ college aspirations to be news worthy. Mary-Kate dropped out during the fall of her sophomore year because she didn’t feel safe among the students. Ashley dropped out at the end of her junior year. I don’t remember a cappella being very popular during high school but for some reason college campuses seem to be breeding grounds for the singing groups. David Letterman is well-known for his top ten lists but did you know he also sponsors a scholarship at his alma mater? The David Letterman Scholarship was established at Ball State University in 1985 and is for average students who are interested in telecommunications. Letterman was a C-student himself and started the scholarship to provide aid for creatively inclined students who aren’t necessarily academic performers.
